The Fabulous Picture Show with Captain Abu Raed

As I attended the screening of Captain Abu Raed here in London, I was very delighted to see that there was media attention and most specifically from Al Jazeera English as they also hosted the screening in a sense.

Many asked me what I thought of the movie, I think it's absolutely brilliant. It sends out a message that could possibly be the most important message we need to send out in the mean time. The quality of the production was beyond amazing, and the twist of the story was extremely interesting and unexpected.

What's the message? That Arabs, as much as they are living in political turmoil and in a geographic area where they were destined to face politics anyway they change their direction, we are also humans which lead lives just as any universal citizen and we face social problems and issues that was barely brought to attention in film making or even in the media in general. This message was quite clear and carried on in Nadine Labaki's Caramel, as she also chose not by any chance mention the War on Lebanon or the political differences people might have in Lebanon.

Anyway, watch the video and I will pop up a couple of times in it. Too bad my friends didn't, well just Sultan for a bit but not Noora and Aliya :(

everything of the day

Word of the day:

when you're too dumb enough to know the difference between Speak and Talk, or you just like to be 'special' - you can use the verb "Spalk". Spalked is the past tense. You can also use it to take the piss out on people who can't say "R" and say "L" instead, but these groups of people would either be Japanese or small kids. So yeah. Spalk.

Video of the day:

Little Miss Jocelyn's bitter man-hater old Jamaican woman character would seriously get you laughing so hard - well at least it did with me. Da Only ting dat iz nat in Raymand is a KNIFE :D

Song of the day:

i love the fact that her music isn't over-polished with fancy effects and such. And i love her broken accent, it all adds up to her quirky style of music - as it's obvious from writing a song about communication technology. Ah, aren't we all fascinated with faxes?

Photo of the day:

me, myself and the rain - Hiba Judeh

beautiful bokeh, i'm absolutely in love with Hiba's photograph especially the little detail of the droplet shown.

Link of the day:

Learn dem London Slang, Bruv!

Blog of the day:

OK, bad me - I edited the image and tossed in colours and a sloppy logo on this. Anyway, Lebanese Graffiti is a really interesting blog, as it closely observes the rise of Graffiti underground culture in Lebanon. Run by Jo (sans "e" as he demands).

Logo of the day:

INDIE, logo designed by the amazingly talented Yeah Yeah! - I absolutely fell in love with it a while ago (still am) especially with it's application on a magazine cover. Geniusly geometric.

that's it for today, come back another day :)

Just when the world gets too depressing...

...Realise you're just living in a cardboard box,
this song makes me happy - and no I didn't just find the song, been humming it for the last 12 years! I just found the video.
80s at it's best

Suheir Hammad

Suheir Hammad was born in Amman, Jordan to Palestinian parents and grew up in Brooklyn - New York. She shares her insights on her experience as a Palestinian-American citizen, with reference to racism, discrimination, war, and more. A form of prose I would personally like to see more of. Check out the videos below, beautiful poems!

I wanna go to...

TOKYOOOOOOOOOO!
*cries*

It's not like i'm a big fanatic of Anime, Video Games, Sushi or being a Harajuku wannabe but I sure would love to visit a place where it's DRENCHED with culture no matter how different it is. I mean, that's the point of visiting places, right? You don't wanna go to Guadalajara for example and look for the golden arches, would you?

I've been eating too much Peanut Butter, I need to quit! haha.
Again with the usual listy list, it's been a while. Eh?
  1. Probably one of the best designed websites in my point of view
  2. And this would be one of the best customised YouTube profiles.
  3. If it's not for the girl with somehow a car's name, I would marry her. HAHA, hilarious!
  4. Who would've thought this chick ends up in one of the best comedy shows ever?
  5. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. Love this huge archive over almost 5 years.
  6. I like sites mentioned in media, and what I like more is to actually find something.
  7. I'm sad New Jersey didn't win, but I loved ANTM Cycle 7.5!
  8. Nothing's better than an official Parody, and nothing's better than Zeroes!
  9. I think HE should get a life, she walked away a winner. Psh, college peeps.
  10. I'm really wishing it's no flunk, but Christina Ricci can't go wrong.
  11. They say Country music is bad, but these always prove me wrong. I love this song.
  12. Now that's another example of how stupid and cruel humans can be. WHY snatch it off it's habitat?
  13. I want one of these, is it real or what?
  14. Like living in a surreal Gotham movie, excellent! People are seriously acing this. Photo at top is another example.
  15. Wow, I think I qualify as a nerd. Well i match all except 8, 2 and 1.
  16. If I'd ever obtain a MAC set, this would definitely be my desk.
  17. Since I wanna go to Tokyo, I wanna try spending one night in one of these!
At the end of this, it seems I wanna be anywhere but here...

What to do when I'm depressed?

Well I get these days when I'm totally hating YouTube, but nothing better cheers me up that the astounding performance of the amazing talented performer Vera Lamprou. She so reminds me of a local one we have, but listen to the charming voice and how she gets the 'right' notes.
